Block puzzle vs Tetris
Nothing falls, nothing compacts, columns count too, and there is no next-piece preview. Four rule changes that make it a different game, not a slower one.
Grid, coloured pieces, lines that vanish when you fill them: block puzzles look like Tetris with the speed removed. Play one for ten minutes and the resemblance falls apart. Four rule differences, each small on paper, add up to a game whose skills barely overlap.
1. Nothing falls
In Tetris the piece descends whether you have decided or not, so the primary constraint is time. Skill is largely the speed and accuracy of your hands, and the difficulty curve is literally a speed curve.
In a block puzzle you place a piece anywhere it fits, in one move, whenever you like. There is no gravity, no drop, no lock delay, no soft or hard drop. The clock is not a constraint at all — you can put the phone down mid-hand and pick it up tomorrow with the position unchanged.
Removing time does not make it easier. It removes your excuse. In Tetris a bad placement can be blamed on speed; in a block puzzle every placement had all the thinking time you wanted, so every fragmented board is fully your work.
2. Nothing compacts after a clear
This is the difference that changes the most and gets noticed the least. In Tetris, clearing a line makes everything above it fall down one row. The stack heals itself, and a well-timed clear can repair damage several rows up.
In a block puzzle the cleared cells simply become empty. Nothing moves. What was above the line stays exactly where it was, holes and all.
The consequence is that damage is permanent until you clear directly through it. In Tetris, a hole two rows down might resolve itself as the stack settles; here, an isolated cell in the middle of the board stays there until a full row or column through that exact cell is completed. There is no self-repair — which is why fragmentation is the central problem of the genre and overhangs are the central problem of Tetris.
3. Columns clear as well as rows
Tetris only clears horizontal lines. Block puzzles clear rows and columns, on a square board — 8×8 here — so every cell you fill contributes to two possible clears at once.
That sounds like a simplification and is really the opposite. It doubles the number of things every placement is doing, and it makes double clears routine: a piece that completes a row and a column at the same time takes both. Since multi-line clears are scored disproportionately, the row-and-column intersection is where most of the scoring happens.
It also changes the shape of a good board. In Tetris you keep the stack flat and low. Here, low and flat means nothing — what you want is contiguity, an unbroken open region rather than an even skyline.
4. Three pieces at once, and no preview
Tetris gives you one active piece, a preview of the next several, and usually a hold slot. You can plan a sequence because you can see it coming.
A block puzzle gives you three pieces simultaneously with no preview and no hold. You choose the order to place them, which is a real decision Tetris does not have — but once the hand is empty and refills, you know nothing about what arrives.
So the planning is a different kind. You cannot plan for a specific piece; you plan for the whole distribution, which in practice means keeping a space that would accept the largest thing that exists. On this board that is the 3×3 square. Protecting a 3×3 region is the block-puzzle equivalent of keeping a well open for the I-piece, except that you can never know when it is coming.
What that adds up to
Tetris is a real-time game about executing a plan under time pressure, where the board partially repairs itself and the danger comes from above. A block puzzle is a turn-based game about not spending your flexibility, where the board never repairs itself and the danger is the shape you have already made.
The clearest sign that they are different games is that a strong Tetris player often does badly at block puzzles for the first few runs. All the fast pattern recognition transfers; the instinct to fill the lowest gap does not, because there is no gravity to make the lowest gap special.

Because the format is turn-based, block puzzles can carry things Tetris cannot: obstacles that survive a clear, blast pieces, and modes with fixed starting positions and move limits. Is a block puzzle just a slow Tetris?
No. Removing the falling is only one of four changes. The bigger one is that nothing compacts after a line clears, which means damage to the board is permanent instead of self-healing. That single difference reverses most of the strategy.
Why does my Tetris instinct work against me?
Mostly the instinct to fill the lowest available gap. In Tetris low is safe because the danger is the stack reaching the top. Here there is no gravity and no top-out — the danger is fragmentation anywhere on the board, so height means nothing and contiguity means everything.
Do block puzzles have a hold slot or a next-piece preview?
Typically neither, and Blockwood has neither. You see the three pieces in your hand and nothing beyond them. The compensating freedom is that you choose the order to place those three, which Tetris does not offer.
Which is harder?
They are hard at different things. Tetris is limited by execution speed; a block puzzle is limited by how many moves ahead you can keep the board flexible. A block puzzle will not beat you with reflexes, and it also will not let you blame them.
