Why do block puzzles get impossible?
The difference between empty space and usable space, why a board can be a third empty and still refuse every piece, and which part of it is the game’s fault.
You have been playing well for ten minutes. The board is maybe a third empty. Three pieces arrive — a T, a 2×2, a three-long bar — and there is nowhere to put any of them. It reads as unfair, and the usual conclusion is that the game rigged the deal once your score got high enough.
That is almost never what happened. Here is what did.
Empty space and usable space are different quantities
Take an 8×8 board with 20 empty cells, arranged as twenty isolated single squares with an occupied cell on every side. That board is 31% empty and accepts exactly one piece in the game: a single block. Every bar, every square, every L is unplaceable.
Now take the same board with 12 empty cells arranged as a 3×4 rectangle. It is emptier by no measure — it has 40% less free space — and it accepts every piece in the game.
The board does not care how much room is left. It cares whether the room is shaped like anything you are holding. Once you internalise that, "a third empty and nothing fits" stops being a contradiction.
Fragmentation is cumulative and invisible
What makes this hard to see coming is that it happens in tiny increments. Each placement that leaves one awkward cell behind costs almost nothing. There is no moment where the board visibly turns bad. It is thirty small concessions, and the bill arrives all at once.
The mechanism is simple: pieces are mostly convex, and gaps are made by the concave sides of pieces. Put an L down and the notch in it leaves a small void. Put a T down against another T and you get an isolated cell between them. Nothing clears it except a full line through it, and full lines get harder as the board gets messier — so fragmentation makes clearing harder, which makes fragmentation worse.
Why it feels like it happens at high scores
Because it does, and it has nothing to do with the game watching your score. It takes a few hundred placements to fragment a board past saving, and a few hundred placements is what a good run is. The correlation is real and the causation runs the other way.
There is a second, more mundane reason: early on the board is mostly empty, so bad placements are free. Every one of them is still a bad placement, you just do not feel it for another five minutes.
The part that is the game’s fault, and the part that is not
There are two genuinely different ways a block puzzle can end, and games differ in whether they allow the first one.
Dealt a dead hand
The game draws three pieces without looking at your board, and it happens that none of them fits anywhere. You never get a move. This is the version players are right to resent, because there was no decision available — the run ended between turns.
Played into a dead position
You place pieces, the board tightens, and eventually the pieces in your hand no longer fit anything. This is the same fragmentation as above, cashed in. It is a loss you earned, in the sense that a different set of placements would have avoided it.
Blockwood only allows the second. A hand is generated against the board as it actually stands: if none of the three pieces can be placed anywhere, the hand is thrown away and redrawn, up to twenty times. If twenty attempts somehow all fail, you are given three single blocks — and a single block fits anywhere there is one empty cell, so the only board that defeats that fallback is a completely full one.
This does not make the game easier. You still lose, and you lose to fragmentation. What it removes is the case where the game ends without you having done anything.
How to tell which one you are in
- The run ended immediately on a new hand, before you placed anything → a dead deal. In a game that checks, this cannot happen.
- You placed one or two of the three, and then the last one had nowhere to go → a dead position. The mistake is earlier in the run, not in this hand.
- The board is fairly empty but full of isolated single cells → textbook fragmentation.
- The board is genuinely nearly full → this is just the end of a long run, which is how it is meant to finish.
Recovering from a fragmented board
Once fragmentation has set in, playing well is no longer enough — you need to undo it, and there are only two tools for that.
The first is a line clear that runs through the mess. A row or column clearing does not care what filled it, so a single clear through a fragmented band wipes out a whole row of isolated cells at once. Aim clears at your worst area rather than your most convenient one.
The second is the board wipe, once the energy meter is full. Its real use is exactly this position: the board is patchy, no single clear fixes it, and you would rather restart the geometry than keep negotiating with it. Since the combo counter survives the wipe, doing it while a combo is running gives you an empty board and a live multiplier at the same time.
What does not work is waiting for a good hand. The hands are fine. The board is the problem.

Do block puzzle games get harder on purpose as your score rises?
In Blockwood, no — the shape weights and the special-piece rates are fixed and do not read your score. What changes with a high score is the board, because a high score means several hundred placements have already happened. The difficulty you feel is the accumulated geometry, not a difficulty curve.
Can I be given three pieces that do not fit anywhere?
Not in Blockwood. The hand is tested against your current board and redrawn if nothing fits, up to twenty times, then falls back to three single blocks. A run always ends with pieces you were holding, not pieces you were just handed.
Is a board with more empty cells always better?
No, and this is the core of it. Twelve cells in a rectangle are far more useful than twenty scattered singles. Judge a board by the largest piece it would still accept, not by the count of free squares.
What is the single most common mistake?
Making the placement that fits most easily. The easiest placement is usually the one that consumes your most flexible space to accommodate your least demanding piece, which is the exact trade you should be refusing.
